Film Forums

I attended three interactive discussions last Saturday held at Cleveland State University. All were hosted by a professor from the school and all three panels were CIFF filmmakers except for one very special guest, Dan O'Shannon, who is the executive producer of the new TV show, Better Off Ted.

The first discussion was about writing films. The panel included O'Shannon as well as three directors/writers from CIFF 33. They talked about how long the process took, from beginning to end, how they developed the idea, and how they put the idea from their head's, to paper, to film. The second forum was filmmakers who were also the cinematographers of their projects. They were insightful on many topics, including their choice of camera, the benefits of using to extras, and the importance of point-of-view. The last discussion that I went was one about editing. The panel included five filmmakers who edited their CIFF 33 entered movies. The panel discussed how much licensing fees were for music, how to get permission to film in public places, and how to fine cut an interview. They even had a conversation about whether or not laugh tracks help or hurt movies.

The whole experience was really nice. Between discussions I had a conversation with O'Shannon on the inadequacy of the Nielson ratings. I also talked to and learned a great deal from Dr. Evan Lieberman, one of the professors in the Film and Digital Media program at Cleveland State University. I had a casual conversation with David Pearl, editor of the film Poly Cultures: Food Where We Live, about his next project and our list of favorite movies at this year's festival. It was almost as interesting and insightful to learn more about the film industry from successful filmmakers as it was fun and enjoyable to talk and interview them.
