I'm currently in the midst of a long courting process, in hopes of painting a fine portrait of Cleveland for my girlfriend, Becca, who is moving here from Boston come June. Considering that this town has its fair (enormous) share of bad publicity, her new choice of residence always receives a questioning glance from her east coast, small campus peers. While I have been furiously/feverishly denying the accusations against this city of which I am from, and love so dearly, it took a lot of convincing to get Becca to move to town. Luckily, she's here now for the festival and seeing Cleveland at it's truly best. After a quick jaunt to the West Side market, we saw a great film, and drove out of the flats, which she called the "most interesting looking area" she's seen in a long time – the flats? Really? I guess it is pretty cool when I don't have to associate it with Shooters or frat boys.
At the point when we saw the sun slowly setting behind Terminal Tower, I saw Becca really relax into this new place, and our life living together.
While much of this is about a romantic relationship with both a partner and a city, I'd like to quickly comment that a date at the movies really never gets old. Especially when the films are probing, interesting, and well done, and the people around you really care about what's going on.
To an ever better international cinema, and the many loves it harbors and creates.
