While this is the Cleveland
International Film Festival, I am truly in awe of Clevelanders. After seeing both
An Alternative to Slitting Your Wrists and
Poly Cultures: Food Where We Live, I am in awe of the deep well of talent we have here in our own backyard! I never expected that the films I would most enjoy would be created by a filmmakers from my own city.
I have always loved films. I can remember my first time in a real movie theater. My mom took me to see
Cinderella at Severance Center. I remember when my grandparents got the video laser disc player that we watched
The Wizard of Oz and
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I remember seeing
Casablanca on late night t.v. with my dad. Always entranced by these filmic experiences, I knew something powerful was at play. Somewhere magical and distant, these adventures were created for my viewing pleasure. The distance and magic were beyond my grasp and comprehension. The fantasy worlds in the movies were out of my reach.
Here over the past days, I have made a connection with that magical and distant past. These films feature my neighborhoods, places I have lived and worked. People I know speak about important things along the way. This experience has changed me in ways. I see my city's place in things more clearly. There is a new depth to my sense of being a Clevelander.
