Saturday's All Right for a Girlfight!

If you were a fan of the movie Girlfight, why not come meet the real things? Boxers is an empowering documentary about an extraordinary, real-life all-female boxing team, and we have some inspiring tie-in events!

First, Boxers Director Joanna Kohler (pictured second from left on the bottom row, along with members of Team Uppercut) will be attending the 3:00 CSU-sponsored Confessions of the Filmmaker forum: Shooting with a Purpose: The Socially Conscious Filmmaker. This is a wonderful opportunity to get her insights on why this film about female empowerment is so important today.

Then, we have our 4:30 screening of the film in our theaters, which will be followed by a Film Forum afterwards. Joanna will be one of the panelists, along with native-Clevelander Vonda Ward, a professional boxer and WCB titlist, and Dr. Ellen J. Staurowsky a professor at Ithaca College. The topic: Is a woman's place really in the boxing ring? While Title IX opened up opportunities to level the playing field for female athletic competition, has this trend gone too far? Come and share your opinion and meet the ladies who really do, and record, it!
