Shorts Program 12

44 PAGES

Thursday, April 06, 2017 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

44 PAGES

For 70 years, Highlights has been a source of fun and education for kids, a demographic the magazine refers to as the “world’s most important people.” In 44 PAGES, filmmaker Tony Shaff follows the staff as they prepare for their upcoming anniversary issue. Working out of an old house in quaint Honesdale, Pennsylvania, the editorial team is an enthusiastic bunch—passionate about children and seemingly always in a good mood. Started by Garry and Caroline Myers, the publication is still family-run, despite personal tragedies and financial roadblocks along the way. Of course, things have changed a lot since its inception in...

AFTER LOVE

Thursday, April 06, 2017 11:50 AM - 1:10 PM

AFTER LOVE(L'╔conomie du couple)

Breaking up is rarely easy, but sometimes it’s damn near impossible. Such is the case for Boris and Marie, whose seemingly loveless, 15-year-old marriage has been hanging in limbo for several reasons. First, the couple’s financial situation is dire. Boris can’t afford a place of his own, so he sleeps in a separate area of the same house. They’ve even split up days with their young daughters, with one of them forced to leave the property until the girls are asleep. Obviously, this ridiculous set up is only leading to more dysfunction. Second, they’re afraid of how the breakup will...

AFTER THE STORM(Umi yori mo mada fukaku)

Ryota is a washed-up author, still clinging to the glory days of his successful, but now forgotten, debut novel. Hit by a severe case of writer’s block, he’s forced to take a job as a private investigator. To save face, he tells his friends and family that it’s merely “research” for his next book. The truth is, he’s falling apart. His wife Kyoko has left him, he barely gets to see his son Shingo, and the little money he makes is gambled away. He’s even resorted to pawning off his deceased father’s possessions. The only stable thing left is his...

ALBA is a poignant look at the life of an excruciatingly shy 11-year-old. Alba, whose bedridden mother relies on her for help, is unable to form relationships at school. Instead she observes the preteen scene from outside, fragile as an insect beating its wings against a window. Alba longs to be a girl who goes to parties and wears pink lip gloss. But since her personality won’t let her, she mostly talks to herself. When her mother’s condition worsens, she goes to live with her father. He’s a maladjusted but well-meaning man, as reticent as the daughter he doesn’t know....

AMERICAN ANARCHIST

Wednesday, April 05, 2017 2:20 PM - 3:40 PM

AMERICAN ANARCHIST

In 1971 a 19-year-old named William Powell wrote The Anarchist’s Cookbook. Made in the turbulent era of the Vietnam War, the book laid out a manifesto against the government. Its message also offered violence as a means to bring about political change. Included in the text were recipes to make bombs, which have been used by viscous criminals to carry out attacks and linked to school shootings in Columbine and elsewhere, as well as the Oklahoma City bombings and the shooting of U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords. Terrorists from ISIS and Al Queda have reportedly used it as well. After its...

Thursday, March 30, 2017 12:10 PM - 1:35 PM

Hatred, which manifests itself in many ways, is often the result of fear. When times are bad, people often look for a scapegoat. This heated and highly topical subject is examined in Yannis Sakaridis’ AMERIKA SQUARE. At 38, Nakos still lives with his parents, unable to find work. His frustration has found an outlet in his obsessive tracking of the immigrants in his apartment complex. As that number grows, Nakos’ racist ideology becomes increasingly dangerous. His tattoo artist neighbor Billy has fallen for an African singer named Tereza. She’s gotten herself mixed up with the mob, and Billy is desperate...

BUGS

Monday, April 03, 2017 11:25 AM - 12:40 PM

BUGS

In recent years the United Nations has suggested that, due to a growing population, we may find ourselves dealing with a food shortage sooner than we think. One of their recommendations: edible insects. Championed by cooks for their unique flavors, and embraced by environmentalists for their small ecological impact, creepy crawlers are being hailed as the miracle cure. In BUGS, director Andreas Johnsen teams up with researchers and chefs from Copenhagen’s Nordic Food Lab to determine whether or not that’s the case. Traveling to such places as Mexico, Australia, Kenya, and Japan, they encounter communities where such delicacies as grasshoppers,...

CONTEMPORARY COLOR

Friday, April 07, 2017 11:10 AM - 12:50 PM

CONTEMPORARY COLOR

When a color guard team asked David Byrne if they could use one of his songs in their routines, they probably didn’t anticipate they’d pique his interest in such a huge way. The eccentric former Talking Heads singer became enthralled by the team’s creative choreography and hypnotic patterns. If you’re not sure what color guard is, don’t worry—you’re not alone. You’ve probably seen it in action, though, during halftime at your local high school football games. They’re the kids twirling colorful flags and tossing prop rifles and sabers, all synchronized to music. It’s an obscure and underappreciated sport that often...

DOMAIN

Friday, March 31, 2017 11:30 PM - 1:10 AM

DOMAIN

Things start to go haywire in this stable environment after a combative denizen named Orlando is banned from his linked community. Residents start disappearing or harming themselves, and odd markers (such as a rat) hint that these pods aren’t as closed-off as they seem. However, it isn’t until Phoenix and Denver (who, improbably, have fallen for each other) decide to make a run for...

THE FIXER

Thursday, April 06, 2017 11:30 AM - 1:10 PM

However, the locals, unimpressed by the sudden appearance of self-important French...

FOOTPRINT: POPULATION, CONSUMPTION, AND SUSTAINABILITY

NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE

In 2011 a baby born in the Philippines marked a world population milestone: seven billion. Every life is cause for celebration, but with the population growing at a rapid speed, hitting such a high number raises serious concerns. Does Earth have enough resources to meet each child’s needs? Can it sustain the damage done by the humongous collective carbon footprint? And what do we do with all the trash? Even more troubling is the issue of equality. The United States accounts for just five percent of the world’s population, but uses over a quarter of the world’s...

Complicating matters is that the department is short-staffed and facing a community that’s growing frustrated with and resentful toward actions perceived to be indifferent. As relations between police and constituents grow even more contentious after a rash of officer-involved shootings, OPD then faces internal turmoil: accusations of sexual misconduct, a racist texting scandal, and the resignation of a staggering three police chiefs in just nine days. THE...

FOREVER PURE

Monday, April 03, 2017 12:05 PM - 1:30 PM

FOREVER PURE

Beitar Jerusalem is not your average football team. To its rabid fans, it’s a lifestyle. But their enthusiasm can sometimes be disturbing. Chants from the stands sound more like rhetoric at a political rally than a sports game. In 2013 what had long been known, but largely ignored, became blazingly clear: many members of their fan-base are indeed right-wing extremists. Until that year, they had been the only club in their league without an Arab player. The acquisition of two Muslim athletes from Chechnya set off a firestorm among the team’s most die-hard supporters. Soon Jewish fans started waving banners...

THE FOUNDERS

Monday, April 03, 2017 11:50 AM - 1:20 PM

THE FOUNDERS

“We were all of one mind: we wanted a place for women to do something they loved and make a living at it,” says retired pro golfer Marlene Bauer Vossler. THE FOUNDERS is a riveting, well-crafted documentary about the 13 founding members of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). These trailblazers (including Olympic phenom Babe Didrikson Zaharias) dealt with sexism, grueling promotional schedules, and skepticism about their athleticism. But they pressed forward anyway due to their love of the game and belief in their skills. This determination and passion still shine through in new interviews with four of the founding...

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

Thursday, April 06, 2017 11:15 AM - 12:45 PM

HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!(Houston, Imamo Problem!)

Have you heard the one about the secret 1960s deal where the U.S. bought the nuts and bolts of the then-burgeoning Yugoslavia space program, with the intention of using these innovations to bolster its own technology? If you aren’t familiar, you’re not alone. The documentary-style HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM! is an elaborate, fictionalized take on the oft-covered global race to outer space. The film merges preposterous details (for example, a pig used as a tragic test pilot) with true happenings, such as vintage newsreel footage and actual audio conversations between President John F. Kennedy and Yugoslavia President Josip Tito....

As a Chinese native, Nanfu always admired the storied symbol of freedom America represents and the power its people have to create their own futures. She witnesses that spirit in her shoeless companion, who is fearless...

Kaleche is bewildered to one day suddenly find she’s arrived at a lodge called Kati Kati—a neighborhood-like purgatory for the dead that resembles a vacation retreat—with no recollection of her life. She also has no idea how she died, and she spends most of the movie trying to piece together why she (and everyone else she meets) is there. Along the way, she forms unique bonds with fellow afterlife denizens including: Mikey, an avid basketball fan who wears a mortarboard because he died before graduation; King, a stoic ex-priest who passes the time painting; and enigmatic community leader Thoma, who...

KING OF BELGIANS

Peter Van den Begin gives another masterful performance (see him also in “Everybody Happy”—41st CIFF) as the titular King Nicolas III of Belgium, a man who is beginning to maybe question his role in the world. The vehicle for the story revolves around a British documentary filmmaker trying to film a flattering portrait of Nicolas and his family. But, while the king and his staff are in Turkey on a state visit, the Belgium province of Wallonia declares independence and the king must hurry back to Brussels to settle matters. A solar flare has all but destroyed all chances of...

LAKE BODOM

Saturday, April 01, 2017 11:35 PM - 1:05 AM

LAKE BODOM(Bodom)

Here’s a great idea: convince your friends to go camping. Then take them to the same spot on a lake where four teenagers were brutally murdered years ago. And the killer was never found! Awesome. What could possibly go wrong? Think you know where this is heading? Think again. Just as the bloody body count begins, LAKE BODOM takes a twist you will not see coming. Gleefully subverting the slasher-film rules while exploiting them for maximum nerve-pounding, this film offers a nasty little stew of carnage, sex, and unexpected surprises (none of them happy ones) that will especially delight horror...

Writer/director team (and real-life couple) Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel star in this incredibly charming homage to the classic romantic comedies of yore, reteaming for their fourth collaboration in decades of working together (you can check out their pitch-perfect YouTube videos). LOST IN PARIS is as goofy as it is delightful—as if a Wes Anderson film courted a Jacques Tati film. And Fiona’s Canadian...

MIXED MATCH

Thursday, March 30, 2017 11:35 AM - 1:10 PM

The idea of mixed-race couples has long been controversial in America. In fact, interracial marriage was illegal in the U.S. until 1967. But times have changed. With the election of Barack Obama, the son of a mixed-race marriage, the stigma continued to recede. In 2012 the number of biracial couples hit an all-time high. However, there’s one area where this topic is still being dissected: medicine. In MIXED MATCH, director Jeff Chiba Stearns follows the stories of mixed-race cancer patients who are struggling to find bone marrow donors due to the complexity of their genetic makeup. Their unfortunate circumstances lead...

MONSTER IN THE MIND

Tuesday, April 04, 2017 2:15 PM - 3:40 PM

MONSTER IN THE MIND

When MONSTER IN THE MIND begins, you’d swear you’re watching a science-fiction movie. It’s filled with monsters and a chorus of people talking in an apocalyptic tone about a rising Alzheimer’s epidemic. The way they present it is terrifying; it’s no wonder the disease is so feared. Journalist Jean Carper grew scared after covering it for CNN in 1982. At that time, many believed Alzheimer’s was simply an inevitable effect of growing old, commonly referred to as senility. The science on the disease was still young, but a whirlwind of horrifying information was spreading to the public. As Carper would...

THE NINE

The city of Modesto lies in California’s Central Valley, a region with some of the highest poverty levels in the nation. One area in particular is the notorious South Ninth Street, a desolate wasteland ravaged by crime and destitution. On paper that description may seem inflated, but when you actually see it up close in Katy Grannan’s THE NINE, it’s pretty jarring. South Ninth is a modern day Wild West, with each person desperately trying to survive another day. To do so often means resorting to egregious methods—prostitution is incredibly rampant. The film follows Kiki, who, despite the madness around...

Though their opinions about religion and...

While it wasn’t intended to focus on a specific cause, Angelo and the film’s directors began to see a pattern as they embarked on their journey. A lot of the chemical waste spilling into our water is coming from the plants that manufacture our clothing. From the dyes used to make our jeans to the chemicals that go...

TICKLING GIANTS

Monday, April 03, 2017 9:20 AM - 1:10 AM

TICKLING GIANTS

The history of democracy could not have been written without pages of satire being included. Perhaps in America we take for granted that our authority figures are to be skewered and forget there are societies where such open condemnation can get you imprisoned or even killed. TICKLING GIANTS is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the rise and fall of Dr. Bassem Youssef, “Egypt’s Jon Stewart.” Originally a heart surgeon in Cairo, Youssef’s own heart was always in comedy. During the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Youssef noticed the media’s recounting of the protests didn’t match what was happening on the streets, so...

THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN

Friday, April 07, 2017 11:20 AM - 12:50 PM

THE UNTOLD TALES OF ARMISTEAD MAUPIN
