All Around Us (Gururi Nokoto)

Kanao and Shoko are complete opposites. He is easy going, while she is a control freak – even about their love life. The only thing they do have in common is that they will be having a child together, so he asks her to marry him. ALL AROUND US is a film that chronicles eight years of their marriage. Once a shoe repairman, Kanao accepts a job as a courtroom sketch artist to increase his earnings for their family-to-be. Through this profession, he soon finds himself exposed to some of the most disturbed people in Japan, including child murderers. As if that wasn’t hard enough to deal with, Shoko has a miscarriage and falls into a deep depression. Director Ryosuke Hashiguchi shows the true connection between two people as ALL AROUND US depicts the ups and downs that form the relationship between Kanao and Shoko. Hashiguchi, winner of the Hochi Film Award for Best Director at the Hochi Film Awards, does not disappoint with this intimate epic. (In Japanese with English subtitles)—L.W.
