The buzz cannot be refuted: THE CHASER is one of the best psychological thrillers to ever come out of South Korea. The film revolves around Joong-ho Emo, an ex-detective with a bad reputation who becomes a pimp. When two of his girls disappear without a trace, he accuses one of his own customers, Young-min, of stealing and selling his girls. What Joong-ho doesn’t know is that the man he suspects is actually a sadistic serial killer who has murdered the two girls. After an intense and brutal pursuit Young-min is taken to the police station where he bluntly confesses to the slaying of numerous girls and admits to holding one more girl who may still be alive. But without any evidence, the killer can walk free in the next twelve hours. It becomes a tense race against the clock for Joong-ho to find the last missing girl in time. As he uses his old detective skills, he hunts to find the last girl that only he believes is alive. Rumored to be re-made in the United States with Leonardo DiCaprio, this masterpiece is a suspenseful and spine-tingling debut feature for Hong-jin Na. (In Korean with English subtitles) — L.W.
