Nearly a decade after creating an urban farm from the ashes of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, the South Central Farmers find themselves in a struggle to save their 14-acre garden from being bulldozed to create a community soccer field. It’s a battle they’re determined to win. “Because without the land,” says one farmer, “we are nothing.” THE GARDEN takes an unflinching look at how nearly 400 mostly Latino farmers nurtured the land, fed their families, and – now threatened with eviction – took to the courts, the media, and finally the streets to save what had become a symbol of a proud community. Along their more than two-year journey, they battle city hall politics and politicians, competing community interests, and prejudice. They even engage celebrities such as Joan Baez and Daryl Hannah to their cause to raise the more than $16 million to buy the land from the developer, but internal problems and a growing divisiveness plague the farmers. Still, as the deadline to eviction nears, will all their hard work be enough to save the garden? (In English and Spanish with English subtitles) – C.K.
