Based on the harrowing bestseller by Roberto Saviano that sold over 1,200,000 copies and was translated into 33 languages, GOMORRAH is the brutal tale of the Camorra, the Italian organized crime cartel based in Naples. The Mafia enterprise is one of Europe’s biggest businesses, generating an estimated 150 billion Euros per year. Over 30 years, the Camorra alone has murdered more than 4,000 people. The Camorra is invested in all kinds of endeavors, both legal and illegal, from drug trafficking and “protection” to tourism, banking, supermarkets, fashion, and the cinema (though not the CIFF). Due to their competitive pricing, the Camorra holds a monopoly in the Italian toxic waste dumping business. For decades, the industries of northern Italy have paid to have their waste dumped in the south, poisoning the water and contributing to a huge growth in cancer in the region. GOMORRAH weaves five stories into a vivid portrayal of the Italy unknown to tourists: a grim place of murder and retaliation where enthusiastic boys barely into their teens are recruited as killers. GOMORRAH is a searing film that was the grand prize winner in Cannes last year. Bestselling author Roberto Saviano has been living under police protection since 2006. (In Italian with English subtitles) – B.B.
