Isaiah Zagar is an artist living in a dream. He is a 68-year-old creator of gigantic mosaics that cover not only his own house inside and out, but over 40,000 square feet of buildings in Philadelphia. IN A DREAM is an unusual documentary made by Isaiah’s son Jeremiah over the course of seven years. It chronicles the musings and motivations of his sensitive, tortured father as he reveals the causes of his passions. Isaiah’s wife Julia, to whom he’s been married over 30 years, is an affable and very patient woman who serves as her husband’s muse. She interprets Isaiah for the viewer, explaining how his work helps him escape his own reality. One of his fears is of losing his passion for creativity as well as for lovemaking. He then seeks to renew his lust for life with another woman. Just as his marriage to Julia seems like it’s unraveling, their older son Ezekiel has a drug-fueled breakdown caused by the departure of his fiancée and baby. Filmmaker Jeremiah Zagar has inherited his family’s extraordinary artistic eye. IN A DREAM is a brave, warm, painful, and wildly inventive representation of his creative, dysfunctional family. – B.B.
