Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie

This movie isn’t typical, and it’s not really about Bigfoot. It’s about two older working-class guys, lifelong buddies in Portsmouth, Ohio, who are searching for some respect and meaning in their lives. Portsmouth is a town of 20,000 on the Kentucky border, in economic misery since 1980 when the steel industry left town. Dallas and Wayne spend pretty much all their waking hours out in the woods, stalking and photographing Bigfoot. Between them, they have 150 photos of him, which they share in person with other devotees at Bigfoot conferences in Tennessee and online with fellow researchers from California. At first glance the guys look like they’d rather go shooting with a rifle than a camera. But as their stories unfold in poignant interviews, we realize their quest has a spiritual significance for them. Dallas practices Reiki for stress reduction and has learned a Native American language so he can call Bigfoot; Wayne tears up as he recounts his frustration with his wasted life. In NOT YOUR TYPICAL BIGFOOT MOVIE, former Ohioan Jay Delaney approaches his subjects with dignity and never with condescension. As Dallas points out wistfully, “Those that don’t see, you can’t make ‘em see.” – B.B.
