One of the most interesting and bizarre films at this year's Festival: TOKYO! tells three astonishing stories by three acclaimed directors. The first segment, 'Interior Design,' is directed by Michel Gondry (director of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.") This mind-boggling tale, in which the special effects are particularly amazing, is about a girl who feels useless until she turns into an inanimate object. In the second segment, director Leos Carax brings to life the character of 'Merde,' a frightening man who lives beneath the streets of Tokyo and emmerges to terrorize random citizens. When Merde is arrested and put to trial, the terror just begins. Finally in 'Shaking Tokyo,' Bong Joon-Ho (director of "The Host") a man who has not left his home in 11 years and lives a life of quiet solitude only to be interrupted by food deliveries. When an earthquake knocks out the pizza delivery girl at his house, it is a twist of fate that throws off his routine. Eventually it is enough to make him want find the girl, but in doing so he finds out more than he wanted to know. The three directors give their personal and twisted view of Tokyo through their stories of their misunderstood characters. (In Japanese with English subtitles)—L.W.
