Kazakhstan director Sergey Dvortsevoy creates a moving story about a young sailor who is looking to pursue his dreams. Returning from duty with nowhere to go, Asa must move in with his sister, her husband, and their three young children on the southern steppe. Although he goes through many struggles as he tries to prove his worth to the family, he is constantly being rejected– whether it is by his brother-in-law who can’t stand him or by a mysterious girl named TULPAN who thinks his ears are too big. Nevertheless, Asa does not give up on what he really wants, which is to buy a home, own a herd, and marry TULPAN. With breathtaking scenes, such as a sheep giving birth, Dvortsevoy captures the landscape and personalities of the characters with success. Winning numerous awards, including the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival, TULPAN is a humorous and touching tale about following your dreams and never settling for less.
