Youssou N'dour: I Bring What I Love

  (login to rate)

Youssou N’dour is a dynamo. He’s a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador who has spoken out to help eradicate malaria and poverty. He’s a powerful icon and an investor in his native Senegal, where he owns a radio station, a newspaper, a nightclub and a recording studio. And he happens to be a Grammy award-winning music legend: one of the most celebrated African musicians in history, hugely popular in Europe, and with over four million records sold in the U.S. Youssou is a singer, songwriter, and composer who mixes traditional Senegalese music with influences ranging from samba to hip hop, jazz, and soul. This film follows him during the making of his recent album, "Egypt," a paean to the peaceful and loving traditions of Islam in Africa, and describes the difficulties he encounters along the way. Whether countering negative Western attitudes toward Islam, or Senegalese refusal to play his religious music on traditional pop radio stations, Youssou remains a wise and warm presence. Filmed in Africa, Europe, the U.S, and the Middle East, I BRING WHAT I LOVE places Youssou’s most personal album in historic and cultural context. (In English, French, Wolof, and Arabic with English subtitles) – B.B.
