Mexico can be a politically corrupt and brutal place, as reiterated by the events unfolding within the two narratives of BLACK BOX. Story one begins with a view of a man dying in a hospital bed. As the cause of his impending death is recounted in fantastical and sharp-edged animation, the pieces fall into place. Emiliano is a man of no good fortune, which brings us to his current predicament. In flashback format via security camera footage, Emiliano meets with businessman Juan and tries to convince him to commit a hit. Emiliano explains that Juan will be caught but, since he has been diagnosed with terminal colon cancer, this is of no consequence. He will be able to provide for his family after his death. In story two, Juan is faced with the moral dilemma that conflicts with the integrity with which he has led his life. In an interesting twist, Emiliano, the protagonist in story one, becomes the antagonist in story two and the struggle between Emiliano and Juan ensues. BLACK BOX thrives on contrast – narrative, formats and textures – providing a multilayered work. (In Spanish with subtitles) – C.C.P.
