Alistar carefully packs his suitcase, cancels his newspaper, and gets ready to leave on a much-anticipated trip with his wife… a long-planned quest of sorts, it is later revealed. Ross (Shane Taylor of "Band of Brothers"), his grown son, stops by the house to wish his parents well on their adventure. What starts as a sendoff, turns into an impromptu family road trip of the most tortuous kind. Due to a bizarre accident, Ross ends up driving them from England to Germany in his work van, mom often riding on a lawn chair in the back. Eschewing the major highways in favor of the “B roads,” the trio meanders their way through Holland and Germany. Alistar constantly needles Ross for all that he is not in life and Valerie, Ross’s mother, tries to keep the peace (“happy face”) and wheedle her way to Warsaw to buy a pair of shoes. It is soon discovered that Alistar’s reason for the often comic, sometimes painful trip is to shed a guilt he’s been carrying for years. And, ultimately, the family members learn each needs one another more then they imagined. BOMBER once again proves that you can grow older but you never really grow up. – C.C.P.
