The Girl On the Train (La Fille du RER)

Above the suburbs of Paris, commuter trains run day and night. Below them a young woman named Jeanne skates through tunnels and alongside the river, approaching the house she shares with her mother. Jeanne and her mother Louise, played by Catherine Deneuve, are good friends. But while Jeanne vaguely seems to be looking for herself, she doesn’t seem to be finding much. Supposedly out job-hunting, she’s actually skating around town or having sex with an intense wrestler named Franck. Louise tries to get her daughter employment with her own former lover Bleistein, now a successful lawyer. But after a shocking incident halts her relationship with Franck, Jeanne fabricates a monstrous story, claiming she’s been attacked on a train by immigrant youths who mistook her for a Jew. Though no one who knows her believes her, the public is outraged and the media decry the scandal. Based on a true event from 2004, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN “became the mirror of all French fears,” according to director and screenwriter Téchiné. (In French with subtitles) – B.B.
