“Mrs. Robinson, you are trying to seduce me.” The unforgettable line immediately evokes the iconic image of a squirming, awkward Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) framed through the slender, nylon-clad leg of Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Benjamin, a recent college graduate, has returned to his parents’ Southern California suburban home for the summer with no plans or aspirations. Bored by the claustrophobic existence of his wealthy parents and their friends but unable to envision a way out, Benjamin soon finds himself orchestrating romantic rendezvous with Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father’s business partner. The affair reinvigorates Benjamin, but he still remains aimless. When his parents and Mr. Robinson force Benjamin to date the Robinsons’ daughter Elaine, his future suddenly becomes clear. But Mrs. Robinson will do anything to keep Benjamin away from her daughter. | Director Bio | Born in Berlin, Mike Nichols moved to the United States in 1944, where he began his artistic career performing in an improvisational comedy troupe in Chicago. After success on the stage, in radio, and in recording, Nichols directed his controversial first film “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Director in 1966. He won an Academy Award for Best Director for THE GRADUATE. Of the few artists to win a Grammy, an Oscar, a Tony, and an Emmy, Nichols continues to direct for both stage and screen. |
