Lea has come home to Catalonia to attend her grandfather’s funeral. An apathetic young woman of 21 who’s been studying in France, she’s suddenly thrust back into the bosom of her dysfunctional family. Though Lea’s parents have long been separated, her mother reappears for the funeral to keep up appearances. Lea’s father Josep Maria, the son of deceased patriarch Pere, is a sensitive man who listens to impassioned opera but is emotionally so withdrawn that he can’t get close to his daughter. Her French mother Joelle drinks to hide her sadness. Not surprisingly, Lea’s a loner and distraught by all the family stress; on top of everything else, her boyfriend is just breaking up with her. Josep Maria’s two brothers arrive with Lea’s cousins, with whom she feels somewhat more at ease than with the older generation. Conspicuously absent until the last minute is the men’s sister Virginia, who has written a book about the family, thinly disguised as a novel. When everyone finally sits down for the funeral meal, it’s time to reexamine familial hypocrisies and pent-up feelings. Young director Mar Coll directed this outstanding ensemble cast to win three awards for THREE DAYS WITH THE FAMILY at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival. (In Catalan, Spanish, and French with subtitles) – B.B.
