A familiar tale of David versus Goliath, THE PIPE is a compelling documentary about the crusade of the tiny remote fishing village of Rossport, Ireland against the multi-national oil conglomerate Shell. When Shell discovered an undersea natural gas field off the west coast of Ireland, representatives came to Rossport to propose the Corrib Natural Gas Project, a plan consisting of nine kilometers of offshore pipe-laying and the construction of a huge processing plant. To the quiet, isolated farmers and fisherman of the village, this was an undeniably massive threat on the simple way of life they have shared for generations. Tragically, the community becomes divided as some feel this prospect could hold potential economic prosperity for not only Rossport, but also County Mayo as a whole. Most, however, resist the strong-arm tactics of a corporation like Shell and believe it is up to them to take action to protect their land and their livelihoods. As demonstrations turn violent between police and protestors, tensions escalate and result in the ultimate involvement of Catholic priests and even the Irish political leader, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. Beautifully shot and featuring the breathtaking landscapes of coastal Ireland, THE PIPE suggests the importance of preserving this land and reflects the relevant global concern for how energy companies affect not only the environment, but also the communities they infiltrate. – M.M.
