A truly one-of-a-kind horror flick, RUBBER tells the peculiar story of a killer named Robert who makes his victims’ heads explode through telepathic powers. Taking personification to a new level, this film offers the typical gore and bizarre humor that could instantly make it a cult classic. Using conventional horror elements in overtly unconventional ways, creator Quentin Dupieux is able to create an unnerving sense of suspense, while simultaneously exposing the film as a social experiment. Set in a desert town, the film calls attention to its fabricated existence by featuring an audience of spectators who watch and comment on Robert’s every move from afar through binoculars. As Robert rolls along destroying anything and anyone who crosses his path, he becomes obsessed with the one that got away, a mysterious and beautiful young woman who Robert follows to a motel and stalks. The existentialist sheriff of the town is determined to track Robert down and continue the story, at least until there are no spectators left. Trouble is, Robert’s a tire. So he is difficult to differentiate from other tires. Plus, is it really possible to stop a killer who is such an unlikely suspect? The absurdity of RUBBER will leave you questioning why, only to be answered with a simple “no reason.” – M.M.
