“Would you like to be in a film? You can play yourself or a fictional character.” So went the ad placed by artist Gillian Wearing. Out of hundreds of responses, seven people were chosen, initially unaware of the intensely intimate experience they were about to undergo. A venture into the blurred world of imagination versus reality, SELF MADE is about a group of strangers and how, through their introduction to method acting, they are able to reach unknown, deeper realizations about their own inner selves. Through a series of workshops led by method acting teacher Sam Rumbelow, each person gradually reveals their internal demons, desires, fears, and regrets. It truly is amazing to watch as these ordinary people strip away their everyday masks, experiencing severely emotional breakdowns in search of deeper truths about themselves. At times overwhelmingly poignant, this film examines how, through various techniques, Rumbelow is able to evoke significant, suppressed memories in order to produce each person’s most genuine performance. A documentary, piece of art, and social experiment wrapped into one, SELF MADE is a film that questions not only how we see ourselves, but also how we present ourselves to the rest of the world in our daily performance of life. – M.M.
