Director T.J. Amato became involved and interested in making “The Sugar Wars: The Life Story of Angelo Lonardo” through his roommate, Frank Lonardo, who is the film subject’s Nephew. Frank shared an 8 hour-long video interview he had done with his uncle with Amato, who he thought might have been interested in creating something from it.
Amato watched all of the footage and wanted to make this documentary, which sheds light on the inner workings of the mafia, even featuring shocking and graphic elements.
The Cleveland International Film Festival always highlights some of the vibrancies of Cleveland, as it showcases various gems of the city—through food, art, sports or sightseeing. It erases the memory of the crime-filled past that once roamed the streets of areas nearby. In “The Sugar Wars: The Life Story of Angelo Lonardo,” viewers can be taken back to Cleveland, Ohio’s very own mafia. This documentary follows the life of mobster Angelo Lonardo and the history of the city.
“The Sugar Wars: The Life Story of Angelo Lonardo” has only been seen by friends thus far and they found it to be “compelling and interesting.” Amato hopes that Cleveland audiences will walk out of the theater pleased and that people will find it as accurate as possible in telling Lonardo’s story.
