Curious to know where the food they eat comes from, and why kids eat the way they eat, 11-year-olds Sadie and Safiyah of New York City started asking questions - and were surprised by what they found. In this charming documentary that was filmed over the course of a year, the girls (accompanied by the ever-present camera) met with food activists, worked with farmers, talked with educators, doctors, families, and friends, and discovered that much of the food they ate was grown far away and trucked to the city. The girls visited and helped plant vegetables on an upstate farm, learned about growing their own food, and discovered the importance of green markets and farmers' markets to an urban community. While WHAT'S ON YOUR PLATE? is focused on encouraging kids to take charge of what they eat, it also serves as good food for thought for adults. – C.K.
