Will You Marry Us? (Die Standesbeamtin)

Year: 2009
Country: SWITZERLAND
Run Time: 90 minutes

Rahel Hubli works as a civil servant in an idyllic Swiss town. Her personal life is less than idyllic, though, since her husband Thomas spends day and night "at work," and she's too stressed to pay attention to their son Flo. At a bookstore where she's shopping for literature about how to sex up her marriage, she runs smack into Ben, her old band mate and the former love of her life. Ben has hit it big in Berlin with a successful pop songwriting career. Turns out he's come back to town to get married to his overbearing movie star girlfriend Tinka. The two celebrities have decided to seek a quiet wedding out of the limelight, just a small ceremony performed by the civil servant at the idyllic town hall. But things get complicated when Rahel realizes her feelings for Ben are stronger than ever, he seems hesitant to tie the knot, and she worries about losing it as Tinka starts asking her to handle more and more of the wedding preparations. Actress Marie Leuenberger, channeling Renee Zellweger, is an absolute delight. See WILL YOU MARRY US? now, before the inevitable Hollywood remake. (In Swiss German with subtitles) – B.B.
