Local Heroes: The Importance of Regional Filmmaking

While Hollywood may be the commercial center of film production, one of the most vital aspects of independent cinema is the way that it gives a voice to more localized concerns and forms of expression. This panel will look at regional filmmaking - in terms of the opportunities it provides the filmmaker for telling stories that are outside the Hollywood model and the alternative production practices it fosters. Today, with more and more filmmakers emerging from regional bases- and many like Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklatter in Austin, Gus Van Sant in Portland, and John Waters in Baltimore choosing to remain in their original locales while still enjoying Hollywood financing and distribution- regional filmmaking has never been more important.

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

On a Shoestring: The Challenges and Rewards of Low Budget Production

The many micro-budget films that have gone on to wide acclaim - such as Kevin Smith‚Äôs ‚ÄúClerks‚Äù (1994) and Jonathan Caouette‚Äôs ‚ÄúTarnation‚Äù (2003), which was a multiple award winning documentary with a stated budget of approximately $218‚Ä?have made it appear simple to turn a miniscule investment into cinematic gold. This panel will explore the many difficulties that go along with low-budget filmmaking, from casting and locations to post-production and music. While the struggles of the low-budget filmmaker are significant, we will also discuss the opportunities for artistic innovation and creative freedom that this production approach affords.

3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Shooting with a Purpose: The Socially Conscious Filmmaker

From the earliest days of cinema, the potential of the medium for reflecting and commenting on social issues has been widely recognized. This panel will gather filmmakers dedicated to socially conscious filmmaking and explore such issues as: the responsibility of filmmakers to their communities; the challenges of financing and distributing films with a strong political or social message; the sometimes difficult relationship between artistry, entertainment, and the political or social message; and the debate between the documentary and the fiction film as vehicles for socially conscious filmmaking.

Getting it Seen: Film Festivals, Distribution, and Finding an Audience

As any filmmaker knows, producing the work is only half the battle. The far more daunting, and often overlooked, task is finding a way to get it seen, and this panel will explore the issues surrounding the quest for an audience. One focus will be on film festivals, including the submission process, exhibition practices, filmmaker attendance, and choosing the right festival for your film. Equally important, though, is an understanding of distribution - from the traditional acquisition for theatrical and home video release, to self-distribution, to the new opportunities offered by the internet.

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Old and New Media: The Intersection of Film and Digital Technology

Digital technology has had a profound impact on the filmmaking process at all budgetary levels, but for the independent filmmaker the effect of digital video cameras, non-linear editing programs, and now on-line distribution has been particularly powerful. This panel will discuss the meeting of traditional celluloid based film production with these new technologies in terms of the advantages digital video can provide, as well as some challenges it may present.
