 February 23rd, 2010 Who will be mayor of the CIFF?It’s hip to be Foursquare. Foursquare, a social networking tool for mobile devices, is a cross between a friend-finder, a social city-guide, and a game that rewards you for doing interesting things. Anytime you log your location with Foursquare, you earn points that translate into virtual “badges.” Frequenting a place more than anyone else will earn you the title of “Mayor.” This year, the Cleveland International Film Festival is using the latest craze in social networking to elect the Mayor of the 2010 Festival. The Mayor, who will be determined on Saturday, March 27th and announced on the final day of the festival (Sunday, March 28) will appear in that day’s Bill’s Buzz video and receive two all access day passes to the CIFF on Sunday, March 28. To get started, all you need is a Foursquare account (sign up at www.foursquare.com), a mobile phone to check in from, and a decent SMS package. Foursquare apps are available for Android and iPhone, while BlackBerry users can check-in at http://foursquare.com/mobile. Users get points for checking in at various CIFF-designated locations within Tower City (see below). You get one point for checking in; five points are awarded to places you’ve never checked in from before; another point if it’s the second, third, fourth place of the evening; and another still for checking in multiple nights in a row. Here’s an important tip: if you want to become Mayor, you need to have uploaded a profile photo, and you must become a friend of “CIFF” on Foursquare. The following venues will be recognized as possible check-in locations during the 34th Cleveland International Film Festival: CIFF34-Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland CIFF34-MK Ferguson Plaza (opening night only) CIFF34-Renaissance Cleveland Hotel CIFF34-Hard Rock Cafe, Cleveland CIFF34-Walkway to Gateway at Tower City (lines for screenings) CIFF34-ChallengeMatch / Tower City Cinemas Lobby CIFF34-Tower City Cinemas (one check-in per film) CIFF34-Tower City Food Court CIFF34-Tower City Fountain CIFF34-Tower 230 The Mayor will be elected based on the total number of check-ins across all the check-in locations combined.
