Film Forums

FilmForums are moderated and interactive panel discussions that feature filmmakers, community leaders, and scholars who are knowledgeable about the topic at hand.

Film forums begin after the film ends, and are 45 minutes long.

What is Stand by?

Only a portion of available seats are sold in advance in order to save room for passholders. Once these advanced tickets have sold, a film is considered on Stand By. However, even for crowded films, we can often accommodate additional patrons just before showtime.

Opening Night Gala

Gala Tickets $200 per person

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

The Gala includes the film at 7:00 PM at Tower City Cinemas, followed by a CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER party at 9:00 p.m. at Post Office Plaza (the former MK Ferguson Plaza) in Tower City Center.

CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER

USA
Directed by Doug Nichol
Running Time: 104 Minutes

With the rise of computers and smart phones, typewriters are teetering on the edge of obsolescence—much to the chagrin of nearly everyone profiled in this insightful mash note to the analog machine. CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER is named after a cozy store in Berkeley, California that plays a major role in the documentary. Run by Herbert Permillion III and his family, the business is depicted trying to balance financial security with its decades-long passion for selling and restoring typewriters. They aren't the only engaging characters, however. There's artist Jeremy Mayer, who uses typewriter parts to assemble human-like sculptures, and expert Martin Howard, who's on a quest to add a legendary, rare Sholes and Glidden machine to his collection. Nuanced typewriter testimonials from super fans Tom Hanks (who has over 250 machines in his collection), musician John Mayer, playwright Sam Shepard, and author David McCullough add incisive perspective. CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER is a love letter to the enduring societal, historical, creative, and artistic value of these machines. –A.Z.

THE HERO

USA
Directed by Brett Haley
Running Time: 93 Minutes

Made famous by his iconic role as a heroic cowboy in the 70s and 80s, Lee Hayden’s present-day career is dismal. Between infrequent voice-over gigs, he passes the time getting high with his former co-star and hesitantly falls into a new romance with Charlotte, a bold stand-up comic half his age. After receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Western Appreciation and Preservation Guild, his colorful acceptance speech thrusts him back into the limelight, flooding him with promising new job prospects. His career and love life gain a second wind while the recent news of his unfortunate medical diagnosis has him in a state of serious contemplation. At 71 years old, Lee dwells on his legacy—not only in his role as an actor, but also as an ex-husband, absent father, and aging man. With a star-studded cast including the legendary Sam Elliott as Lee Hayden, THE HERO portrays a man reflecting on the lasting mark he’s made on this world while attempting to make peace for his remaining days ahead. - A.B.
