Marsha Mason plays a woman who's been cast aside by an ex-husband and an already married live-in lover, both of whom were actors. She shares an apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side with her precocious 10-year-old daughter (Quinn Cummings). Enter a young actor (Richard Dreyfuss) who has sublet the place from his friend, the lover who's left her flat. The three set up platonic housekeeping. Dreyfuss won the 1978 Best Actor Oscar. The film also was nominated for Best Picture, Best Lead Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay.
