Run Time: 106 minutes
One of the most highly anticipated delights in each year's Festival, the International Tournee of Animation is in its 16th annual tour across the country. Representing seven countries, this year's compilation of the best animation the world has to offer consists of 20 short films. The program's innovative titles are created by exciting new techniques of animation produced by computer. Special highlights from abroad include 1981 Oscar winner THE FLY (a fly's-eye-view of a disastrous journey) from Hungary; THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN THREE MINUTES FLAT (the title says it all) from Canada, winner of an Oscar nomination and the Berlin Film Festival's Golden Bear; and Great Britain's UBU (illustrating the outrageous tone of Alfred Jarry's play), winner of the Ottawa 1980 International Film Festival's Grand Prize. A popular contributor to recent Tournees, Paul Driessen of Canada shows JEU DE COUDES/Elbowing, a one-liner about conformity that won Zagreb's First Prize and Ottawa's Special Festival Prize in 1980. East Germany makes its debut in the Tournee with THE RIVER, a prizewinner blending optical techniques and rotoscope animation in a parable of two people separated by an impassable barrier. Acclaimed TV commercials provide a contrast to the varied animation styles of the countries featured. Besides sources already named, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and the United States make significant contributions to this year's outstanding program.
