One of New German Cinema's finest filmmakers, Wim Wenders was born in 1945 in Dusseldorf. He left his studies in medicine and philosophy to train at Munich's Cinema and Television College from 1967 to 1970. Wenders was a film critic for 4 years and a founding member of the Filmverlag der Autoren. Among his recent better known films are "The American Friend," "Hammett," "Lightning Over Water" and "The State Of Things." PARIS, TEXAS is Wenders' 20th film since in 1967 filmmaking debut.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and actor Sam Shepard wrote PARIS, TEXAS' screenplay, originally inspired by his "Motel Chronicles." Sharing a love for the myth of the American West, Wenders and Shepard, both avant-garde, synthesize the themes of the former's road movies with the latter's dramas dealing with skewed family ties in their collaboration for PARIS, TEXAS. THe film has breathaking camerawork and riveting performances from an outstanding cast, headed by Harry Dean Stanton in his most keenly felt portrayal to date.
Structured in 3 parts, PARIS, TEXAS opens with a sublime image of the American Southwest, the landscape taking on a symbolical importance as Travis (Stanton) collapses in the desert, ending a 4-year oddysey. Mysterious and mute, Travis reluctantly drives to L.A. with his brother, Walt (Dean Stockwell). There Travis rejoins his young son and together they search for the boy's mother, Jane (Natassja Kinski). Jane and Travis reunite via a peep-show's one-way mirror, revealing the secret behind their family's disintegration through an enigmatic dialogue that emphasizes their sad lack of communication. For some, the road never ends. .
"This is the best Wenders film since 'Kings Of The Road,' 1976, with which it has definite affinities. . .a beautiful film. . .Muller gives the story a surface polish that hints of Edward Hopper and Georgia O'Keefe Americana paintings. Some images are positively breathtaking." -Ron Holloway, Variety
"A cinema masterpiece. . .dazzlingly imaginative. . .It is certainly one of the greatest films I've seen this year." -Rex Red, New York Post
"One of the year's ten best." -National Board of Review; Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times; Rex Reed, New York Post
