Film Overview

Even those resolutely against commercials in cinemas should set aside their objections for the annual Cannes Advertising Awards. This year's crop represents 113 of the best, funniest, and most innovative of the breed from around the world. Beer, dog food and glue (okay, cars too) bring out the most creative concepts. But watch also for the French plug for Apple computers, pitched as an anti-capitalist slam; the Japanese assault on the condom market; and a gutsy ad for a Brazilian newspaper, declaring their integrity can't be bought. Most of these have not been seen in the United States (Joe Isuzu and John Cleese are exceptions), but anyone opposed to TV-watching in general should delight in the Spanish grand-prize winner at the end.
