Mixing fast-paced video footage with 16mm and 35mm film, Karanovic (SOMETHING IN BETWEEN) creates a lively, sophisticated satire. A Belgrade filmmaker bucks the local film industry's bureaucratic objections as he struggles to finance a documentary about a pair of lovers whose marriage is fiercely opposed by their families because of religious and cultural differences. The lovers become fodder for mass media exploitation when, attempting to elope, the young man is captured and emasculated by the young woman's brothers. Balanced between the tragic and the comically absurd, A FILM WITH NO NAME is always thought-provoking.
