From the true love story between his grandparents, Zhang Yimou makes an impressive directorial debut with this stirring portrait of a remote region in Northwest China in the 1930s. After the mysterious death of her aging and leperous husband, a beautiful young bride takes charge of the sorghum wine business which he had run. Although she knows nothing about winemaking, the fieldhands help her to take charge, and soon their business is booming. She remarries, this time to a charming and handsome young man who loves her deeply, though he seems to enjoy drinking the sorghum wine far more than he likes making it. Their peaceful lives and breathtaking landscapes are destroyed when the Japanese armies invade, throwing this young couple and their families into a desperate struggle for their lives.
