THE RAGGEDY RAWNEY

Set in an unknown war-ravaged time and place, this is the story of Tom, a young army recruit so horrified by war that he loses his ability to speak. He deserts his unit and wanders alone through the devastated countryside, until he comes upon a little girl. She dabs his face with make-up and puts him in a dress, ensuring his survival by transforming him into the mythical "rawney," a speechless mad woman with magical powers. A band of gypsies allows him to travel with them, in hopes of putting his powers to work for them. When a young gypsy girl discovers Tom's true identity, they secretly become lovers, but the impending battles threaten their relationship, as well as the lives of the gypsy troup.
