When eleven-year-old Mackie Daniels moves with her mother to a small town, she doesn't fit in at first. She faces insecurity and boredom in her new surroundings, but eventually discovers "The Challengers," a small band whose members dress cool, ride mountain bikes and play rock 'n' roll. Mackie is a talented musician, and feels that at last she's found a way to make some new friends. But when she tries to join the group, she is shut out by their "Boys Only" membership rule. Now more determined than ever, Mackie finds happiness and acceptance by masquerading as her own fictitious male cousin, Mac. Life as a boy and a girl is delightfully funny, incredibly complicated and very touching as Mackie and all those who love her become involved in her scheme.
