Wim Wenders' futuristic thriller about international espionage is a road movie of vast proportions, covering 15 cities in eight countries on four continents. William Hurt stars as Sam Farber, an American on the run. He's trying to get to Australia to prevent his father's latest invention from falling into the wrong hands. When Claire Toumeur picks him up, there's a definite attraction, but then he vanishes, having taken her stash of cash. A private detective helps Claire track her man around the world, with her lover and a pair of bank robbers in tow. This is a visionary epic of miraculous buoyancy, compassion and wit. Talking Heads, U2, and R.E.M. are among the top-flight contributors to the film's striking soundtrack.
