Like "A Room With A View," WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD is a sumptuous adaptation of an E.M. Forster novel, set in Italy at the turn of the century. A top?notch cast, including Helena Bonham Carter, Judy Davis, Rupert Graves and Helen Mirren, has been assembled for this tale of stiff, upper-class British travelers cast emotionally adrift in a romantic and mysterious land. The story begins as the recently widowed Lilia is packed off to Italy by her supercilious English in-laws for some rest and recreation. There, Lilia becomes enmeshed in a torrid affair with an Italian womanizer. When word of this situation reaches Lilia's meddling mother-in-law, son Philip is dispatched to Italy to put an end to the unseemly affair. Thus begins a serio-comic tale of cultures clashing and passions blossoming in exotic locales.-Vancouver International Film Festival.
