The LA Times calls EVERYTHING RELATIVE "one of the best lesbian films yet," while others praise it as the successor to "The Big Chill." But don't be quick to compartmentalize this comedy-drama concocted by first-timer Sharon Pollack because she couldn't find more than two strong females roles in any recent American movie - hers has eight. The heroines formed a collge-age feminist acting ensemble in the 1970s; six are now lesbians in varying shades of out, one is straight, and they reunite in New York to have the bris for a baby Katie conceived via artificial insemination. Katie and partner Victoria have been together all the while since the friends last saw each other, but for the other women it's come-as-you-are. Generally alone. Maria lost her children to an ex-husband in a notorious custody case and is seeing estranged true love Josie for the first time in eight years. Despite her abrasive attitude, Hollywood stuntwoman Luce also needs someone in her life. Singer Gina may be that someone, if they can ever stop sparring. The occasion is bittersweet for Sarah, who, although happily married, has no success herself in getting pregnant. But EVERYTHING RELATIVE is not dark and bleak-chic; Pollack has said she deliberately got away from that. "I want to give people, lesbians, women, and everybody, some hope." - Charles Cassady
