Run Time: 85 minutes
The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming ? not to defile American shores, as in so many Cold War features, but to quell festering unrest and insoluble uprisings within their own post-Soviet borders. A dark-humored scrutiny of reluctant warriors under duress, CHECKPOINT takes place in the Northern Caucasus where a hard-luck platoon is sent to a remote valley, far from friendly territory. Their mission: bivouac in a wretched hovel and maintain a solitary road checkpoint for a little over a month. And, if possible, stay out of trouble, despite continual provocations from scornful, black-clad peasants, an unseen guerilla sniper who strikes as regularly as clockwork, flirty international relief workers, sheer boredom, and their own private vices for sex and drugs. Uproarious moments of high absurdity march alongside salvos of battleground horrors, right up to a tragicomic finale that goes off like a landmine in your eyes. Reportedly based on a true story, Alexander Rogoszhkin's tripwire depiction of wartime's savage ironies is a worthy comrade to "M*A*S*H," "Platoon," and "Three Kings."
