Run Time: 123 minutes
The late, great Johnny Cash did that song about the character strengthening travails of A Boy Named Sue. But the titular hero of this sentimental drama has the opposite problem. Despite his grandiose and portentious name, Magnifico is seen as a disappointment by his parents, a good-hearted but slow kid, practically written off by age nine. Younger sister Helen has been stricken with cerebral palsy, the rural family places their hope in older brother Miong, off on a scholarship in Manila. Magnifico finds other ways to live up his great expectations, even if hardly anybody notices or appreciates it. When his beloved grandmother is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he takes it upon himself to build her coffin from scratch. He also tries to raise the money to buy Helen a wheelchair, to visit the local carnival. Magnifico's transcendent glory, it seems, is that he's not smart enough to know when things are hopeless. For such a boy, anything is possible...
