Country: SOUTH KOREA, GERMANY
Run Time: 103 minutes
In a tour-de-force behind and before the camera, self-taught filmmaker Kim Ki-duk unfolds the life of a man in five ages, five chapters...four seasons. The lyrical setting is a small, houseboat/monastery floating atop tranquil Jusan Pond in the majestic mountain territory of South Korea's North Kyungsang Province. Only two Buddhist contemplatives dwell here, surrounded by nature - an old monk and a boy novice. This is the boy's spiritual pilgrimage from childhood to youth. And this is a summer infatuation that lures him away from his mentor, and, seemingly, off the path to enlightenment. Years pass before the autumn in which the young monk returns to the monastery, a fugitive from justice. But, as the Buddha teaches, to understand everything is to forgive everything, and even as the prodigal seems hopelessly lost, the wheel of his life is about to turn yet again.
