You could say Randy has not just tough, but terrible luck. After committing a victimless crime, Randy falls under the California ?three strikes? rule of justice, and is sentenced to 25 years in prison. Randy?s cellmate, Jake, a lifer, casually admits that he slit his wife?s throat, which is not encouraging news to Randy. But Jake offers to teach Randy about prison life ? yet nothing goes unrewarded in that harsh psychological environment. Making his feature debut, director Leonard wanted to explore the idea that there is no good nor evil, but something more complex and layered in his portrait of a difficult, raw relationship where having and holding power is the key.
