Like its title, Solondz?s latest film works backward and forward, moving along a continuum in the life of Aviva, a girl of 12 who desperately wants to be a mother. Her own mother, played by Ellen Barkin, is firmly against this, and talks her into terminating the pregnancy. Aviva, whose name is a palindrome itself, experiences the extreme flexibility of morality, and the inflexibility of people to change. Intirguingly, Solondz casts Aviva with eight more actors of different ages, races, and genders, to create ?a cumulative effect that would be more emotionally affecting than had there been just one actor.? PALINDROMES navigates the choppy waters of pre-adolescence with a complex mix of caricature and seriousness.Derrick Tseng, Mike S. Ryan
