THE HERO
(O Heroi)

Year: 2004
Country: ANGOLA, PORTUGAL, FRANCE
Language: Portuguese
Run Time: 97 minutes

Angola, the setting for THE HERO, is gingerly piecing itself back together after 27 years of war in which more than 70,000 men have lost their limbs to landmines. Vit?rio, a 35-year-old veteran returning with only one leg after 20 years of fighting, finds himself homeless and penniless in the city of Luanda. No women but prostitutes will have him, even though he wants to start a family. In time he gets a prosthetic leg and things begin to brighten ? only to have it stolen, along with his war medal. Vit?rio struggles alongside three other characters: Manu, who has lost his parents; Maria B?rbara is left without a son; and Joana is left without political hope. Though a fictional story, director Gamboa weaves together a political and social cry for help in this winner of the World Cinema Dramatic Jury Prize at Sundance 2005.
