Perched atop a Parisian bridge, 28-year-old, one-armed Andre (Jamel Debbouze of "Amelie") wants to put an end to his dire existence-he owes nearly $50,000 to a local gangster. He has tried everything to get the money together, but to no avail. If he doesn't kill himself, someone else will. But before he can take the plunge, fellow depressive Angela, a striking blonde in a black dress, beats him to it. Instinctively, Andre dives into the river below to rescue the girl. On dry land, the two hopeless individuals reinvigorate each other. Andre convinces Angela that she cannot rid the world of someone so beautiful, and Angela promises to help Andre out of his financial dilemma. As they wander the streets of Paris, the unlikely pair find that they may have more in common than being at the bridge. In ANGEL-A, Luc Besson ("La Femme Nikita") adds an enthralling romantic mystery to his eclectic oeuvre. (In French and Spanish with English subtitles) – E.J.B.
