"Sex pays. Love costs." So runs the tagline for BOY CULTURE, the new film by director Q. Allan Brocka and adapted from the best-selling novel by Matthew Rettenmund. X is young, gay, and unlucky in love. He's a successful Seattle prostitute with plenty of clients but a frosty veneer who can only put out for the cash. Meanwhile, he's in complicated relationships with his two gorgeous roommates, Joey and Andy. Though he tingles with desire for Andy, X can't manage to get beyond his sex-for-hire mentality to show his affection. It takes an older, mysterious client to draw him out and to begin to show X what love between boys might really look like. Erotic and poignant, with fine performances by Derek Magyar, Darryl Stephens, Jonathon Trent, and the sophisticated Patrick Bauchau, this is a must-see for fans of indie gay cinema. --BB
