High in the Jotunheimen Mountains sits an abandoned hotel with a very bloody secret. When one of five young snowboarders breaks his leg, the group quickly discovers their mobile phones are of no use at this altitude. Desperately seeking shelter, they happen upon an empty hotel. Considering their lack of options, they decide to at least spend the night. What they don't expect is to find Norway's most notorious and brutal serial killer living in the basement of their new-found lodgings. Armed with a pick-axe, the killer plays a deadly game with his young guests. As the number of snowboarders declines, they muster whatever courage they can to survive. First time director Roar Uthaug employs interesting camera angles to augment the gritty and dark atmosphere of the deserted hotel, creating an unrivaled feeling of dread. Terrifyingly suspenseful from its first to last frames, COLD PREY is an accomplished (and very scary) slasher flick. (In Norwegian with English subtitles.) –J.B.H.
