Subtitled "Apartheid and the Club of the West," HAVE YOU HEARD FROM JOHANNESBURG? is the fourth in a series on the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa. A mix of archival footage of unrest in the Soweto and Sharpeville townships in the 1980s and interviews with early anti-Apartheid activists, including Desmond Tutu, this memorable film "stars" Ronald Reagan as the "Club of the West," the extremely vocal hold-out in ordering sanctions on the racist South African government. Front and center are African-Americans, primarily TransAfrica, a lobbying group created by the Congressional Black Caucus, whose dedication to ending Apartheid ultimately changed governmental policy-and the lives of many black South Africans. This is a pertinent reminder that the anti-Apartheid movement spanned 50 years and involved most of the world, a stunning piece of history.– A.S.
