The last thing Evan’s dying mother says to him is a joke. Her irony seems to be emblematic of his life at the moment… he’s lost his family, his job, and all of his prospects. And a late night bar fight means that now the police are after him. So he hops on a plane to Italy (because why not?). Once there, he ends up in a tiny coastal tourist trap, and the sighting of a gorgeous seductress named Louise compels him to stay. Eventually he convinces her to go out with him, and the two embark on a passionate courtship. End of story, right? Not quite. Louise has a secret. She may not be… of this world. That’s just the starting block for SPRING, a whirlwind cinematic experience that’s part romantic comedy, part sci-fi thriller, and a wholly genuine character study of two lost souls. Thanks to crackling dialogue, scenic locales, and expertly handled direction, this exhilarating adventure is as deftly chameleonic as its main characters. – C.P.
